7A Thompson Island Trip
Team 7A are participating in their trip to Thompson Island this week - they will be returning to SMS at approximately 6:15pm Friday. This is a great community-building experience for all of the students and teachers.

2019 Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2019
In the coming weeks, 6th, 7th, & 8th graders will be participating in a survey about health behavior - a modified version of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey created by the Centers for Disease Control. Please click here for more information and for an opt-out form.
8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip Medication Forms - Due 5/17/19
Medical forms for the Washington, D.C. trip went home with 8th grade students this week. The forms are due back to the office by Friday, May 17th. Please ask your 8th grader to give you the form.
Wellness Policy - Beverages
Students and parents/guardians are reminded that students should not bring drinks other than water to school. This includes soda, juice, coffee, tea, etc. In addition to this being against our wellness policy, it is a hazard near the computers.
Information About the SMS 2019 Staff Appreciation Week
Please show your appreciation for the SMS staff during Staff Appreciation Week. The following events are planned: Snack Day on Monday, May 13th and a Luncheon on Wednesday, May 15th.

Please volunteer food items, your time or money to make this week a success. If you prefer to donate money, you can donate money online via PayPal or send in money (cash or check made out to Sharon Middle School PTO) in an envelope marked SMS PTO by Thursday, May 9th and we will purchase something on your behalf. We could also use some help with set up and clean up.
Fruit and snack items may be brought to the SMS office on Monday, May 13th between 7:40am-10am. Lunch items may be brought to the SMS office on Wednesday, May 15th between 7:40am-10am.

Junior SEMSBA Music Festival - info for Saturday May 4th
For students participating in the Jr. SEMSBA Music Festival on Saturday May 4th, please meet at SMS at 7:55am to be taken by van to the performance site at Braintree High School. Parents and Guardians will bring their child home with them after the concert on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased for the concert at the SEMSBA website, www.semsbama.org.
Green Day Festival - May 4, 12-4pm
Green Day, an annual family friendly sustainability festival, is happening on May 4 at the High School from 12-4, sponsored by Sustainable Sharon Coalition. This is a free family event to promote sustainable living.
Several 6th grade teams will participate in Sharon’s Green Day celebration sponsored by Sustainable Sharon Coalition. The students have been researching and learning about how climate change impacts our lives and our future. Come play arcade type games that they have created and learn how you can make a difference.
Included is a free community dance class with Jean Appolon, happening that morning at 10:30. Jean is the Artist in Residence at Cottage this year. Peer Leader Applications
Students who are current 6th & 7th graders are invited to apply to be a Peer Leader for the next school year. Applications are available in the office and are due back on Friday, May 17th.
Parent Volunteer for Math Specialist interviews

Fun Events for a Great Cause - Global Smiles Foundation
Team 6B is raising money for the Global Smiles Foundation, whose mission is to provide comprehensive cleft care for patients in underserved communities throughout the world. We are raising money to assist a team in Ecuador. Team 6B is asking for $2 donations during lunch on Days 3 or 7 during May. Each donation allows students to purchase a ticket for a fun after school activity with their favorite teachers. Some examples are: karaoke with Mr. Connolly and Ms. Healy, trivia with Mrs. Schechner and Mrs. Shores, and a comedy club with Mr. Marrone. The Sharon community can also help us raise additional funds by visiting our fundraising page. All donations go directly to the Global Smile Foundation on behalf of Team 6B and SMS. Student Council Presents: End-of-Year Celebration - May 10
Student Council is excited to invite 6th grade SMS students to enjoy an evening of fun & friends on Friday, May 10th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. We will have a professional DJ from Siagel Productions, video games brought to you by One Up Games, a popcorn machine, photo booth, snacks, and more. Tickets are $5 and will be sold during lunch on Days 3 and 7. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Students - please remember to wear school-appropriate clothing to the celebration.

They Walk Among Us — a collection! Two plays for the price of one, both written and directed by Ms. Sammons and starring our talented SMS actors, They Walk Among Us is sure to be a theatre event you don't want to miss! Tickets are on sale now at www.quicktix.org/TheyWalkAmongUs and during lunches.

SMS Art Show
The Sharon Middle School Art Department cordially Invites you & your family to the
SMS Art Show on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, from 6-8pm, at the SMS Specialist Showcase.
Artwork will be exhibited in the main hallway art gallery. Meet the art teachers and view an abundance of 2D & 3D pieces. Special thanks to PTO and FAME.
Spring Concerts & Specialist Showcase Tuesday May 21
The Spring Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Encore, and Treble Chorus concert takes place during the Specialist Showcase on Tuesday evening, May 21st. Be sure to visit your child's specialist teachers either before or after their performance. Times are:
- Grade 6 Band, Strings, Encore: Report time 5:45 PM, concert 6:15 PM
- Grade 7 Band, Strings, Jazz Band, Treble Choir: Report time 6:30 PM, concert 7:00 PM
- Grade 8 Band, Strings: Report time 7:15 PM, concert 7:45 PM
SMS Spring Chorus Concert
Join us for the Spring Chorus Concert will take place on the evening of May 23rd. Times are:
- Grade 6: Report time 5:30 PM, concert 6:00 PM
- Grade 7: Report time 6:30, concert 7:00 PM
- Grade 8: Report time 7:00 PM, concert 7:30 PM
All members need to be in their assigned spot, dressed appropriately for the concert, at the report time.
Great East Music Festival
8th Grade Orchestra and Chorus students who have handed in a permission slip and payment will be participating in the Great East Music Festival on Friday May 31st. Students will leave Sharon Middle School by bus to the performance site in Norwood, then head to Canobie Lake Park by bus to celebrate their many years of hard work on their instruments and voices. Students will return to SMS by 8:00 PM.
8th Grade Orchestra and Chorus Performance in DC
The 8th Grade Orchestra and Chorus have a permit to have an afternoon performance on one of their days during their trip to DC at the Jefferson Memorial. Instrumental students may bring their instrument onto the bus with them, with larger instruments being stored under the bus. Students should keep their instruments in their hotel room until it is time to perform. More information to follow.
From the Library
Library class students are learning how to assess online information. Author John Green has recently introduced a 10-episode series on the topic called Crash Course Navigating Digital Information. Click here to see the introductory episode where he discusses the importance of the quality of information we get online. Additional episodes will be added to the library webpage under Library Class Lessons.
SMS Book Share Is Now Available
Thank you for your interest in borrowing the Smart But Scattered books. Due to the amount of interest, we are requesting you pick the books up within 2 days and return them within 2 weeks. If you aren't able to pick them up, we will have to move on to the next person to ensure everyone has the opportunity to access them. We appreciate your understanding. 8B Parent/Guardian Help Wanted - After school snack bars
Team 8B is looking for some parent/guardian volunteers to help support our efforts to raise awareness and funds for Journey Forward. We are looking for volunteers to work at our after school snack bar from through May 10th, 2-3pm. We are also looking for donations of snack items like poptarts, individually wrapped chips, pretzels, gummy bears, swedish fish, cookies, crackers, granola bars, etc. Please send snack items into school for your child to drop off with Mrs. Belcher. School Committee Candidates Night - May 14, 7pm at Sharon High School
The League of Women Voters is hosting a candidates night for candidates running for school committee. It is a great opportunity for parents to ask questions of the candidates. Please see the attached flyer for details.
