This Week at SMS
Tuesday was Upstander Day at SMS. Students and staff participated in activities and discussions to share ways that we can all make a difference in our community. We partnered with some local amazing organizations to support our students in this day - thank you to all who helped out. You can view the Upstander Day presentation here.
Peg Dawson, EdD spoke at SMS to staff and to parents on Tuesday. She shared strategies that parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students. Thank you to Amy Abrams, our Special Education Coordinator, for arranging these eye-opening presentations.
On Friday, 8th grade students were treated to a special presentation by the Sharon High School Choir Program to introduce them to the music program at the high school.
Boston Theatre Company at SMS – Monday, 2/11
Hark! The Boston Theater Company's education program is coming to perform LIVE at SMS on February 11 for the entire 8th grade. Their goal is "for students to discover personal connections to Shakespeare that will spark a lasting interest in theater and classic works". This year they are showcasing their adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. This program is co-sponsored by F.A.M.E. (Friends of Art and Music Education).
Generation to Generation Art Show - Thursday, February 13, 7pm
Over 20 middle school students are participating in this art show at the Lakeside Gallery, which is located in the Sharon Community Center. Generation to Generation features art from students and members of the Council on Aging. Opening night reception with free snack and drink is February 13, 2019 from 7-9 pm.
IMPORTANT: Grade 7 Thompson Island - Forms due on Thursday, 2/14
Information has been sent home regarding the 7th grade trip to Thompson Island. There are four forms in total, plus the presentation from our info session - click here for the forms and the presentation. Please send payment on Thursday, February 14 - DO NOT send the payment before this date.

The next meeting of the school council will be Thursday 2/14 2:30 -3:30 at the SMS office conference room.
8th Grade Guidance News
Bob Pomer, Director of Student Affairs, will give a presentation for 8th grade students about the SHS course selection process during Advisory, on 2/26 (Day 7). SHS Peer leaders will be joining 8th grade Advisories on 2/27 (Day 1) to answer students' questions about Sharon High School.
Lost and Found
Next Friday, February 15, any clothing left in the lost and found will be donated. Please have your child check for their belongings.
SMS Mathcounts Team Takes First Place
Congratulations to the SMS Mathcounts team for taking first place in Saturday’s chapter competition! Team members Rohith Raghavan, Rishi Shetty, Arjun Rastogi, and Olivia Sheng will be moving on to the state competition on March 3rd. Also advancing are 2nd place individual Vishal Nandakumar, 6th place Apurva Varigonda, and 11th place Anwita Revoori. Great work, Mathletes!
Hoops for Heart
Thank you to all who signed up for this year's Hoops 4 Heart tournament. 7th Grade will play on Monday, February 11th. 6th and 8th Grade will play on Wednesday, February 13th. Students should report directly to the gym at the end of the school day and be ready to play.
Due to the Hoops for Heart tournament, Intramurals is cancelled on Monday, 2/11 and Wednesday, 2/13. Robotics is cancelled on Monday, 2/11.
SEMSBA Jr. Music Festival
Congratulations to all SMS musicians who auditioned to be a part of this years SEMSBA Jr. Music Festival. We had 16 musicians advance to perform in either the Jr. band, chorus or orchestra on Saturday, May 4th. All students who auditioned represented SMS with class and pride. Mr. Greely, Ms. Ethier and Mr. Votolato are very proud of all these musicians.
Poetry Slam coming soon
Are you an author at heart? Interested in poetry? Like to perform? Consider participating in the SMS Poetry Slam. It will be held after school on Wednesday, April 3. Winners will move on to the district-wide main event in April. Interested students must sign-up in advance in the library. There was an informational meeting during advisory on Friday. Sharon High School theater students will be visiting SMS during advisory on Tuesday, February 12 to inspire and encourage.
8th Graders - Auditions for Honors Orchestra at SHS
Any student in the 8th grade that plays a string instrument who wishes to audition for the Honors Orchestra for the 2019-2020 school year at Sharon High School, should contact Mrs. Ethier email@example.com for the audition materials and more information as soon as possible. The audition deadline is February 25, 2019.
Donations of Winter Accessories and Socks
Teams 7x and 8x are asking for donations of gently used adult and children’s hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves as well as brand new adult socks for the organization Liam’s Lunches of Love. All of these donations will be distributed to homeless people in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Collection boxes will be placed by the Cafeteria. The drive will last through March 1st.
7A Parents/Guardians - Bird Feeder Materials Needed
Team 7A has begun a fundraiser initiative on behalf of Mass Bird of Prey. On Feb. 15th, students will be constructing bird feeders - they need donations of materials for their project. If available, please send in any of these supplies with your child by Friday, 2/15. They can be dropped off in room 204. Items needed are: legos, popsicle sticks, song birdseed, ribbon, twine, contact paper. Thank you!!

The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle - Mason Buttle is the biggest, sweatiest kid in his grade, and everyone knows he can barely read or write. Mason's learning disabilities are compounded by grief. Fifteen months ago, Mason's best friend, Benny Kilmartin, turned up dead in the Buttle family's orchard. An investigation drags on, and Mason, honest as the day is long, can't understand why Lieutenant Baird won't believe the story Mason has told about that day. (Schneider Family Book Award).

Autism Awareness T-shirts
