Smart but Scattered: How Executive Skills Create Successful Students
Peg Dawson, EdD is coming to SMS on February 5th at 7pm. This event is supported by the Sharon Education Foundation. Dr. Peg Dawson, the co-author of the book Smart but Scattered, will talk about three strategies parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students, including how to structure the environment to reduce the impact of weak executive skills, how to teach executive skills, and how to use incentives to get kids to practice these skills.
Tuesday, February 5th is Upstander Day; Early Release Day - 11:10am
We will be holding a community day focusing on being an upstander - a person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied.
Term 2 Grades
The Powerschool parent portal will reopen on Monday, 2/4.
A hard copy of your child's report card will be sent home on Wednesday, 2/6.
This week we held a soft Lockdown Drill and discussion of ALiCE procedures Friday 2/1 during Advisory.
Drop-off and Parking Lot Safety
Parents should only be dropping children off in the drop-off line not in the parking lots. Please do not circumvent the line by cutting into the parking lot as it creates a hazard for children and adults.
Upstander Day Assembly
As part of our Upstander Community Service Awareness Day on Wednesday, January 30, the students of 8B welcomed J. D. Martz as a guest speaker to launch our awareness campaign about spinal cord injuries (SCI) and how a nonprofit activity-based therapy facility, Journey Forward located in Canton, helps benefit the lives of people with SCI through their specialized intense exercise therapy program.
Jr. SEMSBA Auditions - Saturday, February 2
Students who signed up to audition for Jr. SEMSBA should arrive at SMS on Saturday February 2nd. Students should arrive no later than 8:15 AM. Students should bring their instrument, original music, and money if they wish to purchase snacks. Parents and Guardians should pick up their musician by 11:30 AM at SMS. Please direct all questions to Mr. Greely.
Mathcounts Competition - Saturday, February 2
Students attending the Mathcounts Chapter Competition at the Sage School in Foxboro on Saturday, Feb. 2nd, should arrive at SMS at 7:15 AM. Transportation will provided to and from the competition. Students should dress in comfortable clothing, bring snacks and drinks, pencils and a calculator. Pizza lunch will be provided. We should arrive back sometime around 1:45/2PM. Students can call when we are on our way back to SMS to arrange for pickup.
Chinese New Year Celebration - Saturday, February 2
The Sharon Chinese Community invites everyone to the Chinese New Year celebration at the high school auditorium at 6:30pm on Saturday 2/2. The poster is attached. This is the community's annual signature event in observance of the lunar new year which also serves as a flagship occasion for the community to raise funds for our schools. This year's gala will feature traditional Chinese songs, a variety of dances, classic (and rarely seen) Chinese instruments, comedies, tai chi, karate, and other Chinese martial arts etc. The hosts will be bilingual and more than half of the shows will be performed by kids from the Sharon schools.
SMS Theatre Company Spirit Night at Red Robin - Tuesday, February 5, 5-9pm
You are invited to attend the Sharon Middle School Theatre Company Spirit Night at Red Robin.
Join us on Tuesday, February 5, at Red Robin in Patriot's Place, from 5pm - 9pm. 20% of our fundraising sales will go back to the Sharon Middle School Theatre Company and our production of Grease. So the more people who attend, the more money we will earn. Spread the word. Hope to see you there! Make sure you show the fundraiser flyer or mention our fundraiser so your sales get applied to our fundraiser.
Grade 7 Parents/Guardians Thompson Island Information
Information, two Medical Forms & Permission Slips were sent home on Friday 2/1 regarding the 7th grade trip to Thompson Island. There are four forms in total, plus the presentation from our info session - click here for the forms and the presentation. Please send payment on Thursday, February 14 - DO NOT send the payment before this date.

Poetry Slam coming soon!
Are you an author at heart? Interested in poetry? Like to perform? Consider participating in the SMS Poetry Slam. It will be held after school on Wednesday, April 3. Winners will move on to the district-wide main event in April. Interested students must sign-up in advance. There will be an informational meeting during advisory on Friday, February 8th in room 300. Sign-up at that meeting or in the library. Sharon High School theater students will be visiting SMS during advisory on Tuesday, February 12 to inspire and encourage.
8th Graders - Auditions for Honors Orchestra at SHS
Any student in the 8th grade that plays a string instrument who wishes to audition for the Honors Orchestra for the 2019-2020 school year at Sharon High School, should contact Mrs. Ethier firstname.lastname@example.org for the audition materials and more information as soon as possible. The audition deadline is February 25, 2019.
Grease Makeup Crew
Students can sign up to be on the makeup crew for Grease. They should sign up outside room 310 and pick up an informational sheet with the schedule. The first meeting will be Wednesday February 6th, after school in room 310.

The Health Office and the Grade 6 Health teachers is doing a CATCH My Breath Youth E-cigarette and JUUL Prevention Program through the end of the year. SMS Video Game Tournament
Calling all gamers! The SMS Student Council is sponsoring our 2nd annual video game tournament! We will be holding tournaments for three games: Rocket League, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Brothers, and the winner of each tournament will receive a gift card to Game Stop! The Tournament continue on Monday, February 4th from 2:15 until 3:45. and late buses will be available. If your children would like to play, tell them to visit the Student Council table at lunch on Days 3 or 6 to sign up.
Hoops for Heart
Students can sign up for this year’s Hoops for Heart 4-on-4 Basketball Tournament coming up the week of Feb 11. Students should form a team of 2 boys and 2 girls from their grade level, grab a form from the main office, and then bring in the entry fee and completed forms to the Student Council lunch table on Days 3 or 7. They need to hand in all forms as a team. Please contact Mr. Marrone with any questions.

Boston Theatre Company at SMS – 2/11
Hark! The Boston Theater Company's education program is coming to perform LIVE at SMS on February 11 for the entire 8th grade. This company is known for its innovative approach in presenting Shakespeare to students. Their goal is "for students to discover personal connections to Shakespeare that will spark a lasting interest in theater and classic works". This year they are showcasing their adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of Shakespeare's classic laugh-out-loud comedies. This program is co-sponsored by F.A.M.E. (Friends of Art and Music Education).
