News from the 6th Grade Health Classroom

Grade 6 Health students will be starting the Puberty unit on Wednesday January 2, 2019. This unit covers the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during puberty. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's health teacher -- Ms. Trail or Ms. Pini.


Notes from the Nurse

Grade 7 Health Screenings will take place January 4, 7,8, 10 and 11. Vision, Hearing and BMI will be done during Advisory along with SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) screening. Please click here for information on the SBIRT screening. Postural Screening will be done for all grades on February 13 &14.


The Health Office and the Grade 6 Health teachers will be starting a CATCH My Breath Youth E-cigarette and JUUL Prevention Program. Students will be asked to complete pre and post surveys as part of this national program. Students are asked to not provide their names - just their teacher information. AirPods/Earbuds/Phones Prohibited

Please leave the wireless ear buds at home. We unfortunately have had a number of students sneaking the ear buds on during the school day. AirPods, wireless earbuds, or headphones of any type  will be taken away from the student for the rest of the day. For a second offense, parents/guardians will be called in to pick up the devices.


Junior SEMSBA Auditions
Music students auditioning for Junior SEMSBA on Saturday February 2nd should have their permission slip and check to their music teacher no later than Friday, January 4th, by the end of the school day. Permission slips have been sent via Schoology to folks who signed up in September and October. Forms are also available in the band room.


Recycling and Composting Assemblies

Kathleen Nasti, the Sharon Public Schools Recycling Coordinator, joined Principal O'Rourke this week for an assembly on Recycling and Composting in the school cafeteria.  Many rules have changed with regard to recycling in MA this year and the schools recently added composting to their waste sorting.  Attached you will find the power point demonstration that was used in the assembly.  If students and/or parents would like to become involved in the school Green Team, please email Mr. O'Rourke and Ms. Nasti


SMS Concerts on Sharon Community Television

Sharon Community Television recorded the Middle School Choir Concert and the Middle School Specialist Showcase featuring the Strings, Bands, Encore, and the Jazz Band.  The concerts will air on channel 8 and show times may be found at DVDs and High Definition digital copies of both concerts are available to purchase by emailing or calling 781-784-8888.


8th Grade School Counselor News

If your family is considering a private high school or one of the two regional public high schools (Norfolk County Agricultural High School & Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School), please have your child check in with Ms. Merrigan, School Counselor, about the process.


Sharon Middle School Council

The Sharon Middle School council is in need of a one or two parent volunteers to help develop the school improvement plan.  The school council meets on Thursday afternoons 2:30 – 3:30. The following dates have been sets for meetings this school year.  1/10, 2/14, 3/21, 4/25, 5/16, 5/30.

The school-wide Mathcounts competition will be after school on Wednesday, 1/16. If you are interested in participating, please see Mrs. Chin in Room 203 by Monday, 1/14 to sign up. You will need to bring pencils and a calculator on the day of the competition.
