IMPORTANT – NO Texting in School
Please do not condone your child texting or calling during school. Students are not allowed to use their phones – we will take the phone away. We have had a number of incidents of students texting their parents, and parents texting their children. Please do not come to the school based on a text or call from your child. If your child has forgotten something at home, he/she needs to call you from the front office. The nurse will call you directly if your child isn’t feeling well and needs to be picked up. If you need to get a message to your child, please call the school office.

Advisory at SMS
During the past few weeks, lessons in our advisory classrooms have focused on elements of social-emotional learning that have been shown to boost attitude, outlook, and ability to move forward towards goals. The first area was a focus on gratitude. Following Thanksgiving, all students were asked to think of people for whom they are grateful. After some discussion and reflection on what it means to be grateful, students selected one person (possibly someone at SMS or within the Sharon Public Schools who has helped them along the way) and designed a cornucopia on which they listed five reasons why they were grateful for this person. The cornucopias were then given to the people who were written about. This past week, students were asked to think about someone they didn't know who might need to have their day "brightened with a smile." Students talked about times when people they didn't know did something nice for them, or did something that made their day better. Following the discussion, students then worked to send positive messages by choosing to write letters to veterans or first responders, or making cards for hospitalized children or homebound senior citizens. Research shows that when we think of others (show empathy), it actually makes us feel better by reducing stress and increasing our own positive outlook. We hope that all members of our SMS community remember to continue to take the time to foster gratitude and empathy in their day to day lives.

Sharon Middle School would like to display flags from the countries of origin of our community of students. We have over 120 flags now that we will begin to hang in the gym. Please take our SMS Flag Survey so that we can make sure we have all of the countries represented.
