Advisory Lessons at SMS

Each grade level has different advisory lessons to support our students' success here at Sharon Middle School.  In Term 1, for example, grade 6 students talked about how to set priorities, and not let the little things get in the way of what's most important.  Grade 7 students have explored appropriate norms for digital communication in a school setting and also examined scenarios to determine what constitutes cheating or plagiarism.  In grade 8, students discussed how their "digital life" is similar to or different from their real life, and what that means in terms of our interactions with each other.  In addition, all students participated in lessons where they identified adults and students at Sharon Middle School to whom they feel connected, and could turn to if they had a problem.  Finally, this week, all students participated in a reflection of Term 1. Students took time to reflect on what they did well, where they'd like to improve, and concrete steps that they can take to meet their goals for Term 2.  We encourage you to talk with your student about the goals that they have set, and how they hope to meet those goals for the new term we are in.

American Mathematics Competition

On Tuesday, close to 100 eighth graders participated in The American Mathematics Competition, a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge.

SMS Science Fair

Is your child interested in the designs of science experiments? Would they like a chance to design their very own science experiment? The Sharon High School National Honor Society is excited to present the second installment of the middle school science fair! Thinking creatively by completing an original experiment on a subject that the students enjoy shows them the ins-and-outs of scientific design, and could spark their inspiration in the growing STEM field. The 2019 middle school fair will be held in early February. An information session for the students will be held during advisory on November 27th. An information session hosted for the parents will be held on a date that has yet to be determined. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Mr. O’Rourke or Ms. Burke, the Science Coordinator for Gr. 6-12, at e_burke@sharon.k12.ma.us. We look forward to seeing your child’s ideas come to life.

Celebratory Clothing Discouraged

As a school community we take great pride in being an inclusive and safe place for all. When students attend a celebration and receive a sweatshirt or t-shirt, and then wear these items to school as a group, the unintended side effect and negative impact is that many students feel excluded and left out. We worked with the School Committee and several area clergy to create a policy - see below for the language that was adopted and is in our SMS Handbook. On Tuesday 10/16, we assembled the 7th grade to review this policy with the students. Unfortunately, despite the message shared at this assembly, we have seen an increase in this celebratory clothing this fall. Please talk to your child about this. Please do not have them wear these items to school so that we can continue to make sure that all students feel welcome at SMS. If you have any questions, please let us know.

From the SMS Handbook:

Celebratory clothing worn collectively by a group of people invited to a particular social event is strongly discouraged because it has a negative impact on our school culture and climate, and by its nature excludes students. It includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, etc. that are given out at social events outside of school.

CURRENT 7TH GRADE FAMILIES -  NOTES FROM THE NURSE

We’re still waiting for physicals and immunization reports from some 7th graders.

Please send in physicals NOW.

If you received a letter from Ms. Nathan and have not sent in your immunization reports, your child will be conditionally enrolled (may attend school). After December 1, 2018, the conditional enrollment period will expire. The law provides that students NOT IN COMPLIANCE with these requirements MAY BE EXCLUDED from school until the student provides verification of the immunizations received, and has a scheduled plan signed by the physician, or obtains an exemption signed according to the provisions of the law.

Please call or email Ms. Nathan as soon as possible. m_nathan@sharon.k12.ma.us 781-784-1560

Please send in Epi-pens and Inhalers with doctor’s orders now.

The SMS Robotics Clubs – Two Clubs

Starting after the Thanksgiving break, The SMS Robotics Club will have two different clubs.

The NEW SMS Robotics Club will have it first meeting on Monday, November 26, 2018. Everyone is invited. It will be run by Ms. Michaud and Mr. Sexton in Room 102 from 2:15 to 3:15 pm. SMS Robotics Club is a club that promotes experimentation with robots and software. It will provide a forum for discussion and sharing information, and gives its members a community to participate in and learn about the field of robotics. Our group is about creative expression through technology and the main goals are to have fun, learn new skills and develop new connections.

The SMS Girls Robotics Club will begin meeting again the Wednesday after Thanksgiving (11/28). All girls (grades 6 -8) are invited to come to Mr. Whipple's room (103) right after school. The club will end at 3:30pm, in time for the late bus. At this time, we do still have space for new members but that could change. See Mr. Whipple with any questions.
