Responding to Pittsburgh

Following the deadly attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh last weekend, the SMS faculty wanted to make sure that students had the time and space to think about, process, and ask questions about the event.  Guidance counselors and school psychologists have been available to students as needed.  Many teachers, using resources from Teaching Tolerance, the Anti-Defamation League, and Facing History and Ourselves, interrupted their planned lessons to give students a safe place to grapple with this and other difficult news.  We discovered that many students who do not watch or listen to the news had already heard about this event through friends, family, and social media, so we did not want to ignore it, as ignoring it sends the message that events like this are normal and not worth noting.  If you're wondering how to talk with your child about this or other traumatic events, this resource from the ADL is helpful:

https://www.adl.org/education/resources/tools-and-strategies/5-tips-for-talking-with-children-about-the-shooting-at-the

We are committed to making sure SMS is a safe and welcoming space for all of our students, and we will continue to work together to make sure that everyone in our community knows that they belong.

SMS Weekly Highlights:

  • On Wednesday, SMS celebrated Halloween in style. Check out our Instagram page for some pics – www.instagram.com/sharonmiddle75. The winners of our door decoration contest were: 6th grade – Ms. Miller’s advisory, 7th grade – Ms. Herbstzuber’s advisory, 8th grade – Ms. Hadden’s advisory. Great work everyone!
  • Also on Wednesday, Team 6B spent an amazing day at Treetop Adventures to make up for the rained out day in September. Students climbed, ziplined, balanced and bonded for a great time.

Drop-off/Pick-up Etiquette

When dropping your children off at school, please do not drop them off on Mountain Street. It is very dangerous for students who are walking to school, as well as for traffic. Also during drop-off and pick-up, please pull up as far as you can in the line. If the car ahead of you isn’t ready to leave yet, you may go around them on the left, but please do so with extreme caution – watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks.

Backpacks at School

Just a reminder that students should not be carrying their backpacks around school during the day, including the last period. Backpacks should be kept in lockers until dismissal time.

Photo retake day – Tuesday, November 6th

Lifetouch will be at Sharon Middle School on November 6th to take photos of children who were not in school for photo day last month, or if children need their photos taken again. Students should pick up a new photo form in the office – forms need to be returned on November 6th with payment enclosed.
