Advisory Program at SMS
Every Day 1 at SMS, students participate in an advisory lesson. Our advisory lessons are designed to promote social-emotional learning and to give students a different way of connecting with each other and with staff members. For the first half of term one, our advisory lessons have been focused around two major themes: building community and our SMS Core Values. Students have been working together as they've examined how our five core values - Respect, Honesty, Acceptance, Responsibility, and Fun - can and should come alive in our classrooms and throughout our school community. As we move through the year, lessons will be differentiated by grade level to meet the needs of our students as they move through Sharon Middle School. We encourage you to talk with your child about the SMS Core Values and the work they've done around them so far.
There will be a short informational meeting about Mathcounts at 2:30 on Monday, 10/15, in room 203. Mathcounts is a national program that provides students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. This year, practices will be on Mondays (10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, 12/10, 12/17) and Wednesdays (10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/14, 11/28, 12/12. 12/19) from 2:30-3:30. There will be a school wide competition sometime in January. For more information, visit www.mathcounts.org. Please email Mrs. Chin email@example.com with any questions.
Halloween at SMS!
In celebration of Halloween (Wednesday, October 31st), students are invited to dress up! To embrace the SMS Core Value of fun, SMS will be celebrating Halloween on Tuesday October 31st with a door decorating contest and inviting interested students and staff to come in costume. We do have many students who do not dress up and that is just fine too. Dressing up is not a requirement - we want students to know that we welcome and support them whether or not they decide to come in costume.
Students with some of the most creative costumes may even be highlighted at an end-of-the-day slide show! Here are some friendly reminders about costumes:
- Costume weapons, toy weapons, or anything that could be mistaken for a weapon is strictly prohibited
- Masks and face paint are not allowed
- Costumes that are culturally insensitive or insulting are not allowed
- Please make sure all costumes are school-appropriate
If students are not sure about what might be appropriate, we encourage them to ask their teachers.
