SMS Week Two Update

We had a great week of school. Even with the hot weather, the students and staff have been coming together and working hard. We participated in our first fire drill on Wednesday. Everyone made it to their designated spots on the track in record time. Kudos to the students and staff.

Sharon Middle School Community day and SMS Reads Book Clubs

Today was an amazing SMS Community Day and SMS Reads book clubs for our summer reading. We spent time getting to know one another, doing ice-breaker activities, and examining our identities as individuals, advisories, teams and grades, and school. We’re very proud of how our students connected with the activities and each other.

Treetop Adventures

Our 6th graders will be taking an exciting field trip to Treetop Adventures in Canton. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for some fun and adventure (sneakers, t-shirts, shorts) and make sure they bring water bottles filled with water and ice. If your child has a life-threatening allergy and needs an Epi-pen, it must be at the school by Wednesday. Ms. Nathan (our nurse) has notified parents/guardians if she hasn’t received them yet.

There are three different days the teams will be going:

  • Thursday September 13th - Team 6D
  • Friday September 14th - Teams 6A and 6C
  • Tuesday September 18th - Team 6B

Open House Nights

Sharon Middle School Open House Nights for parents and guardians are Wednesday, September 12th for grade 6 and Thursday, September 13th for grade 7 and 8.  Grade 6 parents will start in their child’s advisory. Students will bring home schedules for parents to bring with them.

Open House Nights start at 7pm. At 6:40 pm Special Education teachers will be in their classrooms for parents of students on IEPs.

Just a reminder – it’s a new school year. Ms. Nathan needs all medications, inhalers, Epi-pens with new orders for this school year. Please bring these to the school as soon as possible.

7th grade Physicals

All 7th graders are required to submit a copy of their current physical and updated vaccinations to Ms. Nathan as soon as possible.

Over-the-Counter Medication Forms

Please return the Over-the-Counter Medications form and Screening Waivers to their advisory teachers by Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

6th Grade Guidance

We are very excited to have the opportunity to incorporate a therapy dog Clover to the 6th Grade Guidance Program. Clover is a 9 y.o. Yellow Labrador Retriever with an excellent temperament and is beginning her 4th year @SMS. Clover will start her job in the coming weeks and she will be in Mr. Walsh's 6th grade guidance office rm. 518. A sign near the office door will indicate when Clover is in the office. Therapy dogs are highly obedient service animals trained to provide affection and comfort to people. Clover will be used to support many of the common needs of the students, such as increasing self-esteem, improving social skills and creating a sense of community.

Clover can help:

  • Strengthen students overall emotional stability
  • Facilitate students learning lessons in responsibility, respect, and empathy
  • Improve students attitudes toward school
  • Helping students to remain calm during moments of stress or emotional upset.
  • Making school a more comforting & enjoyable place.

Previous years I have worked with students that have allergies and phobias. If I need to meet with a student who is allergic or does not like dogs I will ensure Clover is not present and find a space where Clover has not been. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns regarding Clover and her role.

For those who are interested, I can also provide some great research-based studies on dogs in school settings.

Christopher Walsh

Help Staff the PTO tables at the Open House Nights

The Sharon Middle School PTO is organized for the purpose of supporting the education of children at Sharon Middle School by fostering relationships among the school, parents, and teachers.

Please help us build both the SMS community and sponsorship for the PTO by volunteering to help out during the Sharon Middle School open houses on September 12th (Wednesday) and 13th (Thursday).

Volunteers will pick a time to staff the PTO table (near the SMS office) to distribute and collect sponsorship paperwork and dues. We also need staffing at the PTO's apparel table.
