• Snow Day FAQ

As we enter the time of the year where there is the potential for inclement weather, it is fitting to remind everyone of the information related to school cancellations and/or delayed openings due to inclement weather.  I will make every effort to notify our school community as early as possible should a delay or cancellation be necessary.  This may mean the night before or depending on when the inclement weather moves in, it may mean a few hours prior to a delayed opening or cancellation.  It is my intent to give everyone as much advanced notice as possible.

    • There are several factors that determine whether schools may be cancelled or delayed. Those factors include streets, roads, parking lots and/or sidewalks that are impassable or too dangerous to maneuver. If it is determined that we will need to delay or cancel school, the following plan will be in effect:

    • The “NO SCHOOL and DELAYED OPENING” announcement will be carried by radio and television stations (WBZ TV Channel 4, WCVB TV Channel 5, and NBC & CW TV Channels 7 & 56 and NECN).
    • Parents/families and staff will receive a phone call through our school messaging system.
    • I will also tweet the cancellation/delay from @SharonSchools as well as post any delays or cancellations on our district website www.sharon.k12.ma.us
    • If there is a delayed opening, this means that the before school care morning bus pickup (Community Education) and the start of classes will be postponed by one hour, 90 minutes, or two hours.
    • In the event of a delayed opening, all other after school activities will take place at the regularly scheduled times.  The half-day Kindergarten at Heights will be delayed the same amount of time as the rest of the school district, and the half-day, end-of-day  dismissal time for the half-day kindergarten students will be pushed back by either the one hour, 90 minutes, or two hour time delayed in the AM.

If it is determined that school will be closed, this means that all classes and school activities are canceled for the day, including scheduled evening classes and activities.

    • In the rare circumstance where there may be an impending storm or a quickly developing storm, students may be released early from school. I understand this may impose a hardship on some families who will have to make quick accommodations for their children.  I will provide as much advanced notice as possible and work closely with each school Principal to alert families. I recommend that everyparent/family develop a plan of care to address a possible early release from school due to the weather.  The dismissal time of a weather-related early release will coincide with the established early release times already established

    * One hour delay - before care starts at 8:15am
