THE PEOPLE AND THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICT

The School Committee recognizes that the ultimate responsibility for public education rests with the state, but individual School Committees have been assigned specific authority by state law. The Committee will not relinquish any of this authority because it believes that control over the education of children should be in the hands of local citizens as much as possible.

As elected representatives of the citizens of Sharon, School Committee members are responsible for implementing statutory requirements in ways that reflect expectations of local citizens for the education of the youth of the community. When citizens elect delegates to represent them in the conduct of public education, their representatives have authority to exercise their best judgment in determining policies, making decisions, and approving procedures for fulfilling their responsibilities. All decisions made by the School Committee will be made with the primary goal of optimizing the learning of the children enrolled in our schools.

The School Committee is obligated to monitor and assess the desires of citizens with regard to education in Sharon. To the extent possible, members of the School Committee will maintain an open line of communication with citizens of the community, keeping them informed about the progress and problems of the school system, and urging them to bring their aspirations and feelings about their public schools to the School Committee.
